Pounds-force per square inch (lbf/in²) is a non-SI unit of pressure. At 1 lbf/in², a force of one pound-force is applied to an area of one square inch. Both 'PSI' or 'psi' are used as the abbreviation.

One lbf/in² approximately equals 6.895 kPa. Atmospheric pressure is approximately 14.7 lbf/in².

Other abbreviations are used:

psia (pounds-force per square inch absolute) gauge pressure plus local atmospheric pressure
psid (psi difference) difference between two pressures
psig (pounds-force per square inch gauge)
psivg (psi vented gauge) difference between the measuring point and the local pressure
psisg (psi sealed gauge) difference between a chamber of air sealed at atmospheric pressure and the pressure at the measuring point
ksi (kludge) = 1000 psi, combining the prefix kilo with psi abbreviation. It is occasionally seen in materials science and mechanical engineering. It is commonly used to specify stresses and Young's modulus.
