Likes, Dislikes and Preferences
Everybody has his or her likes and dislikes. In everyday conversation we often talk about our likes and dislikes in music, films, fashion and so on and need to learn to express our likes, dislikes and preferences in a variety of different ways. When talking about our likes, we often use "enjoy", "like", "love", "be fond of" , "be keen on", etc.
When talking about our dislikes, take care not to offend the other person. It is improtant to know how to express dislikes in varying degree. " I detest " and " I can't stand " are strong . " I'm afraid I don't " is a polite way to express dislikes. When we agree with what has been expressed, we often say " So do I " , " So can they " , " Neither does he " , " Nor has she", etc. When contradicting the speaker to express the opposite to his or her taste, we use the phrases "Do you? I don't." or "Don't you?I do." When talking about our preferences, we often use the following expressions "I prefer apples to oranges." or "I prefer watching TV to listening to the radio." etc.
