To kill two birds...
Dear 6SQ friends,
My teacher, Mr. Ben, lives abroad. He not only wants to help all 6SQ's friends to learn SPC/TQM knowledges, but also hopes that the quality mangers' English level can be improved at the same time, which means that "to kill two birds with one stone by improving our skills in SPC/TQM and capability in English at the same time". Because of network issue abroad, he can’t publish any topic here. The topic named SPC knowledge I created in September would also not be updated. A new topic named "to kill two birds" has been created. We are looking forwarding to enjoying my teacher's good teaching.

SPC is a key tool in Total Quality Management (TQM) that we, quality practitioners, must learn and master. And, English is an international language that will help us communicate and share knowledge and experiences with our colleagues around the world.

I'm deeply flattered by having Shirley calling me her teacher in this forum. In fact, I've only helped improve her English writing skills, which has nothing to do with SPC.
Systems engineering is a discipline in engineering management, and my specialty before retirement was to promote TQM and the application of many of its associated methods and techniques. SPC (statistical process control), in my opinion, is one of the most important.
Three decades ago, when Dr. Deming was brought to Ford for a discussion on his contribution to Japan's success in quality management and how and where Ford should improve. The answer given by Dr. Deming was: “first, please tell me your work processes.” Then, Ford executives learned that for improvement, the first thing to do was to identify all ongoing processes.
With all work processes identified, he then asked: “how do you know there has been improvement? Please show me the numbers.” Ford executives then learned that metrics must be determined at certain steps along the processes, so that real improvements can be measured and validated.

The essence of SPC is to use statistics to control and/or improve work processes. For example, the percentage of yield of "good" products in the manufacturing of a automobile transmission system.
