Section 2: Test Method
2.1 Place the component* in a well cleaned stainless steel tank of a
size suitable to rest and wash the component.
2.2 For washing, use an approved solvent as defined in Section 4.
2.3 Thoroughly wash all surfaces internal / external surfaces and the
through and blind holes with a sprayer and, if necessary, with
mechanical action (steel rod in blind holes).
2.4 Transfer the solvent and collected impurities into a clean glass or
polythene bottle, washing the tank well to collect up all the residues.
2.5 Use magnetism, (conventional or electromagnetic), to separate
non-magnetic particles to a second clean glass or polythene bottle.
2.6 Heat a 15μm Millipore type filter in a thermostatic stove to 80 ± 20C
for 1 hour then cool it in a glass dryer dia. 300mm and weigh it with
analytic scales (± 0.1mg precision) and find weight “A”.
2.7 Insert the filter in the vacuum filtering equipment, consisting of a
filtering bell, a sintered glass disk, connecting funnel, tail ended
flask suitable for the insertion of Millipore filters.
2.8 Filter, with moderate vacuum, the contents of the first glass/
polythene bottle, (magnetic particles), washing it carefully with
petroleum ether.
2.9 Repeat the heating process as in Sub-section 2.6 and find weight
“B”.
2.10 Find the difference between weights “B” and “A”; the result, in mg,
is the weight of the solid impurities found on the component*.
2.11 The largest pieces of contaminant are to be measured using a
suitable method.
2.12 Repeat steps listed in sub-sections 2.6 to 2.11 for the second glass
/ polythene bottle, (non-magnetic particles).
2.13 Repeat test for a minimum of 5 samples taken at random from
normal production components, in the same condition as delivered
to Tesma, (i.e. from production packaging).*
