With China’s entry of WTO in 2001, nowadays English plays an increasingly important role in our jobs, however, have you ever thought over how to study English well? Here I have three sorts of methods for your reference:
Firstly, you can study by yourselves. Follow International Phonetic Alphabet to make sure your pronunciation is correct, and then try to remember English words by dividing them into different syllables as well as by analyzing their pronunciation rules. If you are tired of learning so many grammars, please try to learn the most useful grammars like present, past and future tenses, present perfect tense, active and passive voices. Look up new words in an English-English dictionary such as Oxford English Dictionary instead of an English-Chinese dictionary or an electronic dictionary. Watch English movies and TV serials like Friends, listen to
WWW.BBC.CO.UK/RADIO 4 & 7, read English novels like The Call of the Wild by Jack London, and write down what you have seen, done and thought about every day in English. In the meantime please don’t forget the most essential is to read and speak, hence I suggest you do morning reading for about one hour if you have sufficient time, and speak with others as often as possible if you have abundant opportunities. In this way, your English is sure to be fantastic.
Secondly, you can study in an English training school like Zhuoyue English College that is located beside a lotus pond and karst landscape in Yangshuo. With 8 years’ teaching experience, Zhuoyue has created an English learning environment of small classes, highly qualified foreign teachers and English only. You can learn new vocabulary, important grammars, foreign cultures, business skills, etc in class. You can also learn and practice a lot after class: There are quite a few volunteers from foreign counties who help you practice oral English for two hours in English corner every evening; there is a speech given by one of the volunteers for nearly one hour every afternoon after class; there is a toastmaster every Thursday evening in which you can give a speech in public to build your self-confidence; there is a English performance for each student every two months, and from time to time there is a reading competition. You are only allowed to speak English even when you are having a meal in the dining room in school. Every month, several excellent students who always have a good attitude, study very hard and help others will be selected and given one week free class for encouragement. In the evening, you can go to the bar to chat with foreigners or go to West Street to help foreign tourists go shopping or rent bicycles; on weekends, you can go out with volunteers or foreign teachers for sight-seeing, in order that you can speak English with them all day. Then, two or three months later, you will find your oral English has been amazingly improved.
Thirdly, if you have enough time and money, you can travel, work or study in English speaking countries like the US, the UK, Australia, Canada and New Zealand. When you stay in these countries, you will have to learn to speak English if you want to communicate with others successfully. This is the most efficient and expensive way for us Chinese people to learn English. After returning to China, you will sound like a native English speaker.
